FRP Walkway Grating for Industrial Access
Corrosion-proof, non-sparking, lightweight walkways for process plants, refineries and water treatment works
Industrial Walkway Grating That Won't Rust or Spark
Industrial walkways see constant foot traffic, chemical splash, rain and de-icing salts. Carbon-steel bar grating rusts in 3–5 years and welds require touch-up painting; aluminum is conductive and costs 2.5× more. FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) walkway grating is non-conductive, non-sparking, and immune to most acids, alkalis and chlorides. At 14 kg/m² for a 38 mm molded panel, it is also 4× lighter than steel — one worker can carry a 1.22×3.66 m panel without mechanical lifting.
- Non-sparking — safe in refinery and solvent areas
- Dielectric — ideal over substations and rail electrification
- Zero painting, 25-year atmospheric life
- Cut with hand tools on site — no hot work

Clips, Fasteners and Edge Supports
Walkway panels are fixed with SS316 C-clips at 300 mm spacing along edges, torque 8–10 N·m. Minimum bearing 50 mm. Edges over open channels must be framed with FRP structural profiles (I 100×50 or tube 60×30) to prevent edge deflection. For handrail and kickplate options see FRP handrail systems. Typical package: grating + clips + edge angle + installation drawing.

Engineering Design of FRP Walkway Systems
Walkway design follows BS 4592 Part 4 and EN ISO 14122 (permanent access to machinery). Three load cases govern design: distributed pedestrian load (5 kN/m²), point load (1.0 kN at ball of foot), and maintenance trolley load (typically 2.5 kN wheel). Deflection limit is span/250 for walking comfort. For pultruded decks, bending stress is checked against 170 MPa allowable (ASTM E1310); for molded panels, shear stress is the limiting factor rather than bending.
Edge support conditions
Panels must bear on a minimum 50 mm wide steel or FRP angle. If the edge is over an open void without support, the panel acts as a cantilever and requires a heavy frame (I 100×50 or larger). We supply edge angles in FRP structural profiles to avoid galvanic contact between steel and GRP.
Thermal movement
FRP expands 2.5×10⁻⁵ /°C. A 12 m walkway with ΔT = 50 °C moves 15 mm. Compensate with slotted holes in support clips (Torx bolt not fully tightened) and expansion joints every 6 m. Tightening clips to full torque locks the panel and causes buckling in hot weather.
| Walkway width | Min handrail | Kickplate | Load |
|---|---|---|---|
| 600 mm (one-way) | One side | 100 mm | 5 kN/m² |
| 900 mm (two-way) | Both sides | 100 mm | 5 kN/m² |
| 1200 mm (equipment) | Both sides | 200 mm | 10 kN/m² |
Walkway Grating FAQ
How is FRP walkway grating installed?
Panels are laid on steel or FRP stringers, fixed with SS316 C-clips at 300 mm spacing. No welding, no hot work. One crew of two can install 80–120 m² per day.
How long does FRP walkway last?
25+ years in atmospheric service; 15–20 years in chemical splash zones. No painting required. Warranty 10 years on vinylester molded #38.
Can it carry forklifts?
Standard molded #38 is pedestrian only. For pallet jacks use I 75×15 pultruded over 1200 mm span. For forklifts, contact engineering — custom steel-framed solution required.
How does it compare to steel grating price?
FRP is 30–50% higher upfront than painted steel, but 2.5× lower total cost over 25 years (no repainting, no replacement). See TCO table above.
How FRP Walkway Grating Is Made
Molded FRP grating is produced by hand lay-up in a steel mold. Continuous E-glass roving is laid in both directions to form a grid, then saturated with isophthalic or vinylester polyester resin. A carborundum (aluminum oxide F24) grit layer is sprinkled on the top surface before gel coat cures, creating a permanent anti-slip layer. The panel cures at 60 °C for 90 minutes, then post-cures at 80 °C for 24 hours to achieve full resin conversion. Standard panel size is 1220×3660 mm; thickness 25, 38 or 50 mm. Open area is 65% — this means 65% of the surface is open space for drainage, ventilation and light transmission, while 35% is structural glass-reinforced area.
Resin chemistry
Isophthalic polyester (ISO-NPG) is the standard workhorse: good mechanical properties, acceptable corrosion resistance, 60 °C continuous service. Vinylester (Derakane 411) is specified for chemical and marine service: 90 °C continuous, better acid/alkali resistance, 30% higher modulus. Phenolic resin is reserved for high-temperature and low-smoke applications (see phenolic grating).
Quality control
Every batch undergoes flexural testing per ASTM E1310. Fire performance per ASTM E84 is tested annually. Water absorption per ASTM D570 must be <0.5%. UV aging per ASTM G154 (1000 hours) is tested yearly. We supply Mill Test Certificates with every shipment.
Packaging, Delivery and Installation
Panels are packed in wooden crates 1220×3700×600 mm, 10–12 panels per crate, ~250 kg total. Loading by 2.5 t forklift. Storage: horizontal on flat dunnage 150 mm high, covered from direct sunlight. On site, panels are cut to size with an abrasive chop saw or hand saw; cut edges should be sealed with gel coat to prevent water ingress. Installation crew of two can place 80–120 m² per day: lift panel, position on stringers, fix C-clips at 300 mm spacing, torque to 8 N·m.
Why Engineers Choose GRP Over Steel
Glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GRP / FRP) grating has become the default choice for industrial walkways, platforms and trench covers. The reason is not aesthetics — it is total cost of ownership. Painted steel grating requires scraping and repainting every 3–5 years in chemical and marine environments. Galvanized steel lasts 10–15 years before corrosion attacks the bars. Aluminum corrodes in alkaline washdown areas. Stainless 316 is the only comparable metal, but at 3× the cost of vinylester GRP and still prone to pitting at the waterline.
FRP does not rust, does not need painting, and carries a 25-year design life. It is 70% lighter than steel, which reduces the structural steel subframe, lowers shipping cost, and makes manual installation feasible without heavy equipment. It is non-sparking and non-conductive, which is why it dominates refinery, offshore and substation applications. It also has a lower coefficient of thermal conductivity than aluminum, so barefoot areas stay cool in sunlight.
Total cost of ownership comparison
| Cost item (25 years) | Painted steel | 316 stainless | Vinylester GRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial material | $25/m² | $120/m² | $45/m² |
| Repainting (every 4 yr) | $60/m² | $0 | $0 |
| Replacement (15 yr) | $25/m² | $0 | $0 |
| Subframe (lighter deck) | $30/m² | $30/m² | $18/m² |
| 25-year TCO | $140/m² | $150/m² | $63/m² |
The numbers tell the story: vinylester GRP is 55% lower total cost than either steel or stainless over a 25-year horizon. Add the safety benefits (non-sparking, non-conductive, anti-slip wet), and the engineering case is clear.

Installation and Lifetime Maintenance
FRP grating is famously low-maintenance. But "low maintenance" does not mean "no maintenance". For a 25-year service life, we recommend the following inspection schedule. Annual visual inspection: walk every 12 months, look for broken bars, missing clips, UV chalk on the top surface. Clips: re-torque every 3 years — thermal cycling loosens bolts slightly. Cleaning: wash with high-pressure water 200 bar; for chemical residue, use pH-neutral detergent. Do not use solvent-based cleaners on the gel coat — they can craze the surface.
UV chalk: after 8–10 years outdoors, the gel coat may show faint surface chalk. This is normal and does not affect structural strength. If appearance matters, apply a coat of UV-stabilized clear gel coat, available from us as a touch-up kit. Repairs: a broken bar can be spliced with a FRP repair kit (resin + mat) in 30 minutes; the panel remains in service. Full panel replacement takes 15 minutes for two workers — no hot work, no welding.
Safety in installation
Cutting FRP generates dust. Wear P100 respirator, eye protection, gloves. Dust is silica-glass, not toxic but irritates lungs. Wet cutting suppresses dust. Do not cut near open flame — resin is combustible, though self-extinguishing per ASTM E84.
Technical Specifications and Standards
Our GRP grating is manufactured under ISO 9001 quality system. Every batch is tested for flexural strength (ASTM E1310), water absorption (ASTM D570, <0.5%), bar size tolerance (±0.5 mm), and resin content (65–70% by weight). Fire performance per ASTM E84 Class A. Thermal stability per ISO 75 HDT (load deflection temperature) — 180 °C for vinylester. UV aging per ASTM G154 (1000 hours QUV) —>70% retained strength.
