FRP Grating vs Steel: Weight, Load and Installation Cost Compared

Steel wins on absolute strength. But the weight you carry to a jobsite, the crane you need to lift it, and the paint cycles you maintain over 20 years are where the real cost of grating is decided 鈥?and that is the comparison most buyers miss.

The Weight Difference in Numbers

FRP is roughly a quarter the weight of steel for equivalent grating duty. A 38 mm molded FRP panel weighs about 18.6 kg/m虏, while a comparable steel grating of similar structural depth typically weighs four or more times that. The result: lighter transport, no crane for most panel runs, and crews that can carry panels by hand.

Load Capacity 鈥?the Honest Part

Steel has higher ultimate stiffness, so it carries more load at the same span. That is the honest limitation of FRP, and it is solved at design stage 鈥?shorter spans, deeper bearing bars, or pultruded sections with higher section modulus. The table below gives real section properties for ZeAllgrate molded panels so you can compare on load/span, not on marketing.

Installation and Handling Cost

Light panels mean lower freight, faster rigging, smaller crews and less downtime. In retrofit and elevated work the handling advantage compounds: a worker lifting a quarter of the weight does more metres per day with fewer lifting aids and less fatigue risk.

Total Cost of Ownership

Steel needs paint every 2鈥? years in chemical or marine service and structural replacement as section loss accumulates. FRP in the same service is maintenance-free and never needs repainting. Over a 20-year life in a corrosive environment, the maintenance line dwarfs first cost 鈥?and that is where FRP's economics win.

The Honest Limits of FRP 鈥?and the Engineering Fixes

  • Lower stiffness than steel 鈥?solved at design stage: shorter spans, deeper bearing bars or pultruded sections. ZeAllgrate load/span tables give the safe span for your load.
  • UV exposure 鈥?specify UV-stabilised resin and gel coat for outdoor service; surface chalk is cosmetic, not structural.
  • High-temperature chemical service 鈥?phenolic and specialty systems extend the envelope to 150鈥?80 掳C; beyond that, thermoplastics or lined systems may be required.
  • Cutting and modification 鈥?FRP cuts with standard carbide tooling; dust control and edge sealing matter (see our installation guide).

Reading the Table

The table reflects the environment, not a universal winner. Where corrosion is the enemy, FRP removes the maintenance steel cannot avoid and cuts the handling weight by about three-quarters; where service is benign and the load is extreme at long span, steel's first cost and stiffness may win. State the environment, load and life-cycle budget before choosing the material.
